AEW Wrestlers Frustrated Over Tony Khan’s Creative Changes
In the world of professional wrestling, backstage dynamics often mirror the drama in the ring.
Recently, reports have surfaced about growing frustration among AEW (All Elite Wrestling) wrestlers regarding the frequent creative changes implemented by AEW President Tony Khan.
Tony Khan’s Creative Turmoil
According to a report by Bryan Alvarez on the f4wonline.com message board, Tony Khan has been frequently altering the scripts for AEW shows, including major pay-per-views like Double or Nothing.
This last-minute tinkering has left wrestlers in a state of confusion and uncertainty about their roles until just hours before a show begins.
Comparison to WWE’s Past
This situation draws parallels to the era when Vince McMahon helmed WWE, notorious for making script changes to Raw and Smackdown up to the last minute.
Alvarez, who is well-connected within the wrestling community, highlighted that this unpredictability has become a norm in AEW, causing discontent among the talent and staff.
Wrestlers Left in Limbo
One of the critical issues raised is the lack of communication and planning. Wrestlers are often flown into cities for events only to find out they won’t be used, while others receive last-minute calls to appear.
Alvarez noted, “Most people, not just the wrestlers, have no idea what they’re doing until the day of the show, and sometimes not until an hour or so before the show.”
AEW’s Changing Dynamics
Despite the frustration, Alvarez prefaced his comments by acknowledging that AEW in 2024 is still better run than WWE in 2019.
However, he pointed out a stark contrast in how AEW operated in its early days compared to now. Previously, AEW had a well-structured approach with long-term storytelling and well-defined weekly cards announced in advance.
Increased Talent and Show Demands
The chaotic nature of AEW’s current booking is partly attributed to the increased number of shows and the expanded talent roster.
Tony Khan’s accessibility has also become an issue, making it harder for wrestlers and staff to communicate effectively with the top brass.
