Scrapped Plans for ECW Legend WWE NXT Appearance Revealed

Recent details have emerged about scrapped plans involving ECW legend Francine, who was initially slated for an active role in WWE’s recent NXT special held at Philadelphia’s historic 2300 Arena. While the November 6th episode featured numerous ECW icons, including Bubba Ray Dudley, Rhyno, and Rob Van Dam, Francine’s anticipated involvement was ultimately scaled back, despite fan hopes of seeing her participate in a more hands-on capacity.

Francine Was Approached for Referee Role

Francine revealed on her Eyes Up Here podcast that WWE had reached out with plans for her to serve as the special guest referee in a match between Jaida Parker and Lola Vice. According to Francine, WWE Talent Relations Manager John Cone contacted her about the referee role in October, explaining the vision WWE had for her at the ECW-themed NXT event. This assignment was intended to showcase Francine’s wrestling legacy within the iconic Philadelphia venue.

However, after discussing the physical demands of the role with her husband, Francine reconsidered due to past abdominal surgeries. She realized the fast-paced action required for refereeing a match could pose challenges, ultimately deciding it would be best to step back from that responsibility.

Francine’s Proposed Alternate Role as Timekeeper

To stay involved in the special episode, Francine proposed an alternative role as a guest timekeeper, suggesting it would allow her to engage with fans without the physical strain of officiating. WWE considered her suggestion but instead offered her a role as a backstage interviewer. Unfortunately, a scheduling conflict at Rhode Island Comic Con, where Francine lost her voice, impacted her ability to fulfill even this modified role. Francine ultimately appeared as part of the live audience, a decision that left some fans wishing for a larger spotlight for the ECW legend.

A Memorable NXT Event Despite Adjustments

Francine’s appearance was scaled down due to her health concerns, but she expressed gratitude for being included in WWE’s tribute to ECW. Fans have since speculated on potential future WWE appearances for Francine, hopeful that her role may expand if her health permits.

The ECW-themed episode highlighted WWE’s commitment to honoring wrestling legends, and Francine’s participation, even in a limited capacity, added authenticity to the celebration of the ECW legacy.
