In an emotional and candid interview, WWE Superstar Sonya Deville recently opened up about the knee injury she sustained in 2023.

The incident occurred just days after she and Chelsea Green won the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. On July 28, during a SmackDown tag match against Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair, Deville tore her ACL, a severe injury that would keep her out of the ring for several months.

Sonya Deville Injury: The Moment It Happened

Deville recounted the fateful match during an interview on Insight With Chris Van Vliet. She described the moment her knee buckled mid-match, noting how she initially dismissed the pain to continue performing.

“I knew something was wrong. It felt a little weird,” she said. “My knee buckled, and I thought, ‘Oh, that was weird, but I’m fine.’ I had eight minutes left in this match. We’re about to go to a commercial break. I need to get it together.”

Despite the injury, Deville pushed through, tagging out to her partner Chelsea Green and trying to assess the situation during the commercial break.

“Anyone in the live audience was probably like, ‘What the heck is she doing?’ I’m hopping up and down on the apron trying to gauge if I can trust my knee. Sure enough, it was sketchy at best,” she recalled.

Fighting Through the Pain

Deville’s determination to finish the match showcased her professionalism and commitment. She continued to participate actively in the match, taking on a comeback run and even performing a superplex.

“The whole time I was like, ‘Oh my God, I hope I don’t fall flat on my face,’” she admitted. After the match, Deville tried to downplay the injury, hoping it was just a sprain.

However, the severity became undeniable later that night when she collided with a wall in her hotel room due to instability in her knee.

The Road to Recovery

Realizing the extent of her injury, Deville faced a challenging recovery period. Her perseverance paid off when she made a triumphant return to WWE television on the May 20 episode of WWE Raw.

The journey from injury to recovery highlighted her resilience and passion for wrestling.
